Description
This program is mainly focused on the development of oral comprehension, expression and interaction and on the analysis of the speech of Spanish speakers. It is called “Course of improvement of speaking skills in Spanish: From listening to speaking“.
The course uses a methodology based on the application of an oral language corpus to teaching, created by Dr. Carlota Nicolás, a CIAM collaborator.
The course was born as a result of an agreement between CIAM and the Association of Hispanists of Egypt (HEG in Spanish), which was signed in 2014. It aims at promoting Spanish language and culture teaching and the organization of courses of Spanish as a foreign language in Soria.
The 5th edition of the course was planned for the summer of 2020, but it has been postponed to 2021 due to coronavirus pandemic.

Objectives
The course focus on those communicative aspects that are usually problematic for students, paying special attention to oral comprehension, expression and interaction. Through the analysis of texts of an oral corpus (audio files such as podcasts, radio clips, presentations and audiovisual texts), students work on lexical and grammatical contents as well as cultural aspects.
The general and specific objectives of the course are developed after analyzing the needs of the students, and they focus, as said before, on those objectives related to oral comprehension, expression and interaction.
B1
- To communicate with reasonable correction and flexibility in situations related to everyday issues that involve a certain degree of complexity.
- To use a varied but simple vocabulary and structures with relative fluency and correction.
- To describe experiences, wishes, complaints and to talk about plans.
- To understand and produce relatively complex texts on everyday topics and short official documents.
B2
- To communicate with sufficient fluency and accuracy, and adapt to the register and level of formality required, in order to express arguments and nuances appropriate to the situation.
- To get along in social situations fluently, accurately and naturally.
- To understand and produce texts on specific and abstract topics.
Methodology
The program is mainly practical. The sessions are organized following dynamics and activities that involve the participants experientially, both inside and outside the classroom. The course focuses on the work with podcasts, which are about a number of diverse and current topics. After working with podcasts, students record short audio files that are put together. The result is a weekly podcast that works as a radio program developed by the students.

Libby S.
“I went to the Red Cross for the first time today to start my Spanish in the community and volunteering program and I am very happy with the opportunity that I had to help the children in the summer program. When I spoke with the director of the program, before arriving in Soria, she said that I should have the opportunity to do service learning and since that conversation I knew that I wanted to help people out with English in my volunteering work.”
