Why Soria and CIAM
Soria is one of the safest cities in Spain. It is a small city with a rich natural, artistic and historical heritage that can be easily explored on foot. It is located two hours away from Madrid and is not invaded by mass tourism, which ensures that students have plenty of opportunities for meaningful experiences in Spanish. In Soria it is easy to be part of the life and work of the community while enjoying the extraordinary landscapes that surround it and its many cultural and sports activities.
Spain is a country with a remarkable cultural and geographical variety. Its historic cities are the perfect scenario for US students to improve their Spanish and get closer to the art, history and current reality of Spain.
Participants in the program will receive credits from their home university. CIAM helps the student throughout the process of recognition of university credits.

Spanish for advanced students (Spanish 300 level) and heritage students
Reading, watching, writing. The course will have three levels that will be intertwined, namely: 1. a writing course; 2. a reading course and 3. a film course.
- Reading: students will read carefully, comment on and discuss texts, written mainly by poets Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and Antonio Machado, taking into account their socio-historical context, the objectivity of the texts, and the treatment of important topics in relation to the students’ life experiences.
- Watching: students will watch films by some of the most important contemporary directors of Spanish cinema, such as José Luis Cuerda, Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, Icíar Bollaín and Víctor Erice. Their films will be contextualized, analyzed and discussed.
- Writing: different types of genres will be used. Texts will be read, analysed and discussed. Students will be provided with tools and resources to write the following types of texts: 1.1) A narrative text in the first person; 1.2) A descriptive text; 1.3) An expository text (news article, conference report, and book, film or sports event review; 1.4) An argumentative text on certain topics.
Students will pay attention to linguistic aspects (grammar, vocabulary, syntax, etc.) and to errors in the use of language, the use of verb tenses, the use of connectors, etc. They will broaden their vocabulary as well as their repertoire of idioms and collocations, and they will work on aspects related to the production of written texts: adaptation to the communicative situation, coherence, cohesion, textual structure, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Students stay with a host family, in a full-board basis (3 meals a day), and at a single room.
Staying with a host family is a one-in-a-lifetime experience, a unique opportunity to develop linguistic and intercultural skills. Living with a family not only ensures that you use Spanish as a language of communication, but it also helps breaking down prejudices and stereotypes, and having a broader perspective.
Our families are special. Soria is a city where everyone knows each other and we know our host families. In fact, they are part of our community and our project. Besides a familiar environment to spend time and talk, they offer students an individual or doubled room, the use of common spaces at the house, a private or shared bathroom, and Wi-Fi connection. The families live very close to the city center and no more than 30 minutes away from CIAM.
We select families after visiting their house, which provides information about the family members and the relationships between them. For us it is important to ensure effective communication with them, as we want our students to feel welcome.
